A widely held opinion is that vital capacity is relative to height and other biometrical measure such as body weight, body surface area and chest girth. However, there was no remarkable study in the relationships between diaphragmatic excursion and vital capacity or tidal volume, in accordance with an exhaustive review of literatures.
In an attempt to evaluate such relationships, we performed the measurements of diaphragmatic movement as well as biometrical states and vital capacity simultaneously with tidal volume, using spirometry and fluoroscopy in standing position, on 44 healthy Korean people (30 males and 14 females) ranging in age from 19 to 43 years.
On study, average diaphragmatic excursion was 7.245 (S.D. =1. 563)cm with range of 4.0cm to 10.0 cm during vital capacity measuring. Accordingly, vital capacity has proportionally increased with lengthening of this movement insignificantly(r=0.0517). But vital capacity has increased rather proportionally with heightening (formula of Hepper et al: 0.9XHt3 or Bateman¢¥s formula: 873 X Ht3) or increasing body surface area (West¢¥s formula: 2.5XBSA2). Nearest data to vital capacity was according to the height. Tidal volume has no meaningful relationship with diaphragmatic excursion in resting state. The sum of Diaphragmatic movement and Chest girth expansion has no remarkable relationship with vital capacity (r=-0.0008247).
